Alkanes Alkanes are a class of hydrocarbons consisting entirely of single-bonded carbon and hydrogen atoms. They are also known as saturated hydrocarbons because each carbon atom forms the maximum number of single bonds, which is four. This saturation gives alkanes their stability and relatively low reactivity compared to other hydrocarbon families. Alkynes are hydrocarbons that contain at least one carbon-carbon triple bond. This triple bond consists of one sigma bond and two pi bonds, making alkynes unsaturated hydrocarbons. The presence of the triple bond gives alkynes distinct chemical properties .
