Generic: albuterol inhaler Trade: Proventil HFA
(Pharmacologic) Bronchodilator, Beta-Adrenergic Agonist
(Mechanism) Produces bronchodilation by relaxing
smooth muscles of bronchial tree and trachea.
Onset/Peak/Duration:
Special Assessments:
Adult Inhaled: 1-2 inhalations q4-6h
Administer only w/actuator provided.
Onset: 5-15min /Peak: 0.5-2h /Duration:
3-6h
Safe Dose Range: Prophylactic use: 2
inhalations 30min prior to exercise
-Drugs w/Epinephrine! -Other sympathomimetic
bronchodilators -MOA inhibitors -Tricyclic antidepressants
-May decrease serum digoxin levels
Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to adrenergic
amine (congenital long QT syndrome)
Pregnancy Category: C
(Adverse Effects) -Nervousness, restlessness, tremor
-Chest pain, palpitation, edema
-Paradoxical bronchospasm
-GI upset N/V
-Dizziness or vertigo
(Purpose) Relieves bronchospasm
associated with asthma, bronchitis or COPD.
-Assess lung sounds, BP, O2sat & HR
before administration & at peak levels.
Monitor lab:ABGs,
- Monitor for s/sx of fine tremor in fingers
Antidote: Propranolol
Significant improvement of pulmonary function (relief of
broncospasms) within 60-90min.
-Teach correct use of inhaler
-Avoid drug touching eyes
-Contact PCP before
increasing/decreasing # of inhalations
-Contact PCP ASAP if albuterol fails to
provide relief
-Contact PCP before taking OTC cold
