INTRODUCTION

Introduce yourself to your patient and/or family. Patients want to know who will be involved in their care. It is important to provide your name and what you do, including your responsibility or status for that shift. Connect with your patient.

DURATION

Discuss duration of the upcoming procedure that you will perform such as urinary catheter insertion. Provide length of time for procedure, as well as, when it will occur. Give approximate time frames for procedures.

Explain procedure prior to performing it, answering any patient questions. Omitting procedural explanation decreases patient satisfaction and increases patient anxiety.
