For Asians, we are portrayed in a certain way through media
They are usually not represented for who they are and are changed in ways to suit
media needs or the audience
Example: White people taking on Asian roles in movies
When Asians make it into the media, they are portrayed with stereotypical roles
such as the sexualization of Asian women, the nerd or foreigner
*Geography of Southeast Asia
Southeast Asia consists of Vietnam, Laos, Burma, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia,
Indonesia, Philippines, and Singapore
A lot of Asian culture comes from India and China
Suvannabhumi: “Land of Gold”
Is the term “Southeast Asia” a social construct?
This term did not come to be until recently
French Indochina
Tonkin, Annam, Cochin (European names for Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia)
Indochina comes from the French writer Malte-Brun
French colonization led to the remapping of Asia
Thailand was never colonized by any European power
