Math 350 Section 2, Spring 2007
Do the following to be prepared for class on Monday, February 12
1. Do the Bad Bargle Problem with ¼ of the pigeons flying away rather than ½ of
the pigeons flying away. Write up your work on an overhead to share in class on
Monday.
1. Do the Hand Shake Problem, and write up your work on an overhead to share
in class on Monday. Try to write up your work as to score at the “expert” level.
Homework Assignment #6, Due Wednesday February 14
1. Three friends, returning from the movie Friday the 13th Part 65, stopped to eat at
a restaurant. After dinner, they paid their bill and noticed a bowl of mints at the
front counter. Sean took 1/3 of the mints, but returned four because he had a
momentary pang of guilt. Faizah then took 1/4 of what was left but returned
three for similar reasons. Eugene then took half of the remainder but threw two
that looked like they had been slobbered on back into the bowl. (He felt no
pangs of guilt - he just didn’t want slobbered-on mints). The bowl had only 17
mints left when the raid was over. How many mints were originally in the bowl?
2. A. In how many different ways can you make change for a quarter?
B. In how many different ways can you make change for 50 cents?
C. In how many different ways can you make change for $1 without using pennies?
3. A farmer needs to fence a rectangular piece of land. She wants the length of the
field to be 80 feet longer than the width. If she has 1080 feet of fencing material,
what should be the length and the width of the field? - Do this problem two
significantly different ways.
