Question/Assignment
Response
1
Why are business models important in e-
commerce?
Business models are very important in e-
commerce because they allow potential
buyers/users/consumers etc. to look at the
advantages and disadvantages of e-commerce.
When we are able to see how a company
generates revenue, and how the business is
structured, etc. we can see if it is more efficient to
do business with that business as a normal, land
business, or if it is better to deal with the business
as an e-commerce.
2
Locate a website for a government agency, local,
state, federal, or from another country. What do
you observe in terms of the site’s organization,
content, and usefulness?
United States Department of Agriculture:
www.usda.gov
This site is a very organized website, with the
content organized in a manner that is very
understandable. It allows you to search by
keyword or search by a number of subjects. You
are able to view the same website in Spanish. On
the main page, the center is filled with the latest
news pertaining with the current issues circulating
in the Department of Agriculture. On the bottom of
the page it has links to other government pages as
well as links to the policies of the Department of
Agriculture. All in all, I would say that this site is a
very useful site with information that is organized
in a manner that is easy to find what you are
looking for.

Please list three things that might cause different individuals to have unequal access to e-commerce technologies. What technical or social steps can be taken to reduce unequal access? Not all e-commerce users have credit cards, making it very hard or even impossible to purchase products online. I don’t think that there is much of a solution to this problem because there aren’t other ways to trade money over the internet which are efficient or safe. A second problem with unequal access would be that certain websites are for certain countries only, either because of culture preferences or problems due to shipping the products. If you are looking to buy a product but can’t because of your residence, it can be frustrating. I think the answer to this would be allowing people to buy the products as long as they are willing to pay the full shipping and handling or even an extra cost due to the high price of shipping. A third problem with unequal access would be certain security settings on certain networks. For example, sometimes when I try to access certain websites from my computer, I am not able to because of the security settings on the SLU network. Since I am not able to change the settings the only solution would be to go to another computer (not on the SLU network) and use that to access the websites.
