JRN 220 Assignment #1 Visual Variety
Objectives:
• Get to know your camera.
• Make interesting and unique pictures.
• Make a variety of photos you have never considered.
• Include people as much as possible.
• Discover the joy of photography.
The Assignment:
Shoot at least 8 photos of each category.
1. Shoot a variety of photos looking up, (lookingup).
2. Shoot a variety of photos looking down, (lookingdown).
3. Shoot a variety of photos of reflections, (reflection).
4. Shoot a variety of photos of shadows, (shadow).
5. Shoot a variety of silhouettes, (silhouette).
6. Shoot a variety of close-up photos 3 feet or closer, (closeup).
7. Photograph one or more people you know, (peopleiknow).
8. Photograph one or more people you do not know, (peopleidonotknow).
Remember:
WORK IT! Shoot eight pictures of the same subject, move around, use different
focal lengths and allow yourself enough time as not to make redundant
pictures.
• Try to shoot verticals, at least two verticals required per category.
• Avoid centering your subject or distracting backgrounds, fill the frame.
• Avoid the common (pedestrian pictures). Look for the interesting and different.
• Write a complete caption for each of the eight final photos, who, what, why,
when and where.
• Include people in at least 4 categories.
Turn In:
• Drop a folder named with the class ID and your last name into the “Drop Box”
during the first five minutes of class – Wait for my direction! Example of folder
name, (340_fitzgerald).
• Inside that folder you will have nine other folders, one folder named, “edit” and
the other eight each named for a category of this assignment. Inside each of
those eight folders are 8 photos of that category. See my examples.
• Each assignment will have a specific file naming scheme. This is your first
assignment so you will use a one-thousand series number. File name should
read, picture category (see above), underscore, any four digit number starting
with a one. Example, (shadow_1243). You will lose points if directions are not
followed.
